Due to these unpredictable times and taking into account safety measures applied in Latvia, IOL 2021 will be held remotely, with no teams able to attend in person.
The exact amount of participation fees and registration deadlines will be determined in a week or two.

We thank you for the patience and look forward to having you online with us on July 19-23, when one of the most exciting events of the summer will take place! Opening and closing ceremonies will be streamed online, but for the individual and team competitions, teams must meet in a single location and will be invigilated by a person appointed by the Jury.

At its most recent meeting, the Board reconfirmed its decision from last November to go ahead with this summer’s event in Ventspils, Latvia, as much as travel and other restrictions permit. Any teams prevented from attending in person, either by their own or Latvia’s travel rules, will be permitted to participate remotely, as long as they can convene in their own country.

We have received many queries regarding the 2021 Olympiad, scheduled to take place in Latvia, July 19th-23rd.

Obviously, we all hope that the Olympiad can take place as normal. However, we recognize the possibility of this not being the case, and have discussed the options open to us at this time.

We are pleased to announce the decision that, whatever the circumstances, there will be an Olympiad this summer. In the worst case, if travel to Latvia is impossible, the Olympiad will be held remotely, with teams participating in their own countries.

In the case that the Olympiad can go ahead, but some teams are prevented from travelling, we will make arrangements for those teams to participate remotely, in their own countries. Exact details will be announced in due course, nearer the time, when the situation is more certain.

Let us all hope for the best outcome, and that we will all meet in Ventspils in 2021!

From the Board of the IOL

It is with great regret that the International Board of the IOL has to announce the cancellation of this year’s Olympiad, scheduled to take place in Latvia, July 20th-24th. This is obviously due to the ongoing global health situation.

The Board has discussed many options, including postponement to a later date, or holding an online competition, but has decided regrettably that none of these options is viable. Postponing for a few months is not possible due to the venue not being available, as well as the continuing uncertainty about the situation in the relative short term, and potential difficulties with funding. An online competition has been ruled out for practical reasons, particularly the fact that many countries have not yet been able to complete their national competitions to choose a team, and would have difficulties doing so, as well as the practical challenge of ensuring a fair competition for all involved.

We trust that, although disappointed, those who would have participated will understand the inevitability of this decision, and we hope everyone will remain safe and healthy throughout the crisis.

And some good news: the 18th IOL will take place in Ventspils, Latvia, from July 19 to July 23 2021.

See you in Ventspils!
